Greetings

Hello, dear members of the Korean Society of Echocardiography.

I am Goo-Yeong Cho of Seoul National University Bundang Hospital and a director of the Scientific Committee.

We have successfully accomplished the 47th Autumn Conference of the Korean Society of Echocardiography with your ardent participation and support. We established a venue of academic exchange for great scholars and young researchers from the US, Europe, China, Japan and Asia-Pacific, and they envied the development of our society.

Of course, there were some matters to be improved, but we tried our best to make the conference successful, and luckily, we received many paper abstracts domestically and internationally. Over 1,500 persons enrolled our society, and some ordinary people from overseas participated in the conference.
The chairman, directors and academicians are making efforts for new ideas for the Korean Society of Echocardiography to become a society that covers all heart diseases instead of being limited in echocardiography. We have tried to help treat patients by sharing each other’s experiences on cases that aren’t covered in the academic conference by holding symposiums and workshops regarding specific diseases three times a year.
Some senior members who played a role as the anchor of our society already retired or are about to retire. We will recognize their absence greatly, but at the same time, we are aware that new generations are becoming the foundation of our society. Since 2008 when I took the position of director, I have directly witnessed our society develop gradually, and now, I came to belong to the senior group before I know, getting through chief editor, general affairs director and academic director. I will try my best although I am not perfect.
Even though our society is up against a brick wall regarding echocardiography companies and insurance matters, we are trying hard to communicate with related academic societies and government officials and to persuade them constantly, so we expect good results.

I would like you to give us continuous support.
Thank you.

39th Workshop of Korean Society of Echocardiography

September 21, 2019, Student Union of Chonnam National University Medical School, Gwangju

In September, the 39th KSE symposium and workshop were held in our university to celebrate the retirement of Professor Jong Chun Park of our university. On the same day, the conference of the Korean Society of Heart Failure and the conference of Honam Circulation Society were held, along with heavy rain, which made us worried. Nevertheless, many professors and doctors from the whole country came to honor the conference.
In the morning, KSE Symposium was held jointly with the Korean Society of Cardiovascular Imaging. The subjects were myocarditis and pericarditis, and 8 professors gave meaningful lectures about multimodality imaging and medical / surgical treatment. In the afternoon, there were 9 case presentations for the same subjects. After the lectures of the morning, we could study the cases presented in the afternoon. Personally, I could learn a lot about good explanation to patients from the beginning, considering other examinations in case the diagnosis is not clear and cautions about tapering medicine from a full-time professor of our university, who made a presentation about my chronic relapsing pericarditis patient that has recurred four times.
During the event, we celebrated the retirement of Professor Park Jong-chun. We wished his new life after the retirement in half a year with regret. He has contributed to the university and hospital as well as the Korean Society of Echocardiography for decades.

The 47th Annual Scientific Meeting of Korean Society of Echocardiography

November 23 ~ 24, 2019, Grand Walkerhill, Seoul

The 47th Autumn Conference of the Korean Society of Echocardiography was held at Grand Walkerhill Seoul from November 23 to 24, 2019. The cold weather below zero started from November 14, the day of the College Scholastic Ability Test, but on the day of the conference, it became warmer to about ten degrees above zero, so many people came to the conference with lighter outfit. The autumn conference is always a warm event where we can see good people and share greetings, but this year was more special to me maybe because of the warm weather.
I believe many good quality programs of this year’s conference were satisfactory for audiences that spared precious time of weekend. There were introductions about the key session several times one month before the conference, which helped audiences to comprehend the sessions they were interested in among the various programs. The Echo-Pathology session, which was the third time this year, has been one of the major events of the autumn conference. The imaging of the cardiovascular system and heart tissues were accompanied for the explanation of normal heart structure, and for case reports of rather complicated patients, 3D printing was used along with the imaging of the cardiovascular system and heart tissues, which enabled audiences to enjoy more easily and interestingly. This year, multiple case reports about congenital heart disease were included, which was expected to provide more profound understandings about the disease that was considered difficult.
The joint sessions with academic societies of interventional procedure, cardiac insufficiency, arrhythmia, cardiovascular surgery and radiology were meaningful as a forum for academic exchange with excellent lectures of experts in each field and heated discussion. In the today’s medical environment that the interdisciplinary treatment is not optional but necessary, the role of cardiovascular system imaging including echocardiography has to be greater, so joint sessions will increase in the future. At the joint sessions with academic societies of the US, Europe, Asia-Pacific, Japan and China, the latest knowledge on various subjects was shared, and active opinions were exchanged. I was honored to take a position of the senior person present with Thor Edvardsen, the current president of EACVI, at the EACVI HIT-KSE Club 40 joint session. The presentations of two overseas speakers invited from EACVI HIT were great, but personally, I was more overwhelmed by presentations of Professor In Cheol Kim and Hee Sun Lee of KSE Club 40. Unlike the last year, the oral presentation sessions for each subject were performed simultaneously in three rooms to expand opportunities to experience ongoing research. Thanks to the efforts of the academic committee, the number of audiences in the oral presentation sessions dramatically increased from the previous years, and discussions were done actively.
This autumn academic conference provided plenty of various programs for all audiences from beginners to experts in the echocardiography and cardiovascular system imaging fields to choose sessions suitable for each person. I hope next year’s academic conference will meet the expectations of an increasing number of audiences.
