Greetings

Dear members of the Korean Society of Echocardiography,
It has been almost two years since non-face-to-face time that we had never experienced before with the outbreak of COVID-19 that came without notice. Despite the difficult times, I am happy and grateful to be able to greet all of you who have been busy with treatment, education, and research at the end of 2021.
As new Year's parties, year-end parties, large and small academic meetings, etc., which have been so common, are held online all of a sudden, we had no choice but to turn to the digital world that we thought was far away, or maybe we couldn't get close to in order to overcome the awkwardness and clumsiness of connection. In the words that we meet several times a day, but the meaning still does not become a daily routine and it is like being in a science fiction movie such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Big Data, Deep Learning, Internet of Things, Digital Education, Robot, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Collaboration, etc., it suddenly occurred to me that we were experiencing the future much earlier than we had predicted and expected. It is said that the time so far has been predictable, but the future is unpredictable, and that only those who dare to take on challenges with curiosity and passion will open a new path. Our echocardiography society has so many people who have such passion and wisdom. It is no coincidence that the society has grown into an excellent academic society recognized by both itself and others with continuous development since its founding in 1993. Hoping that all members will join at an important point in creating the future of the Korean Society of Echocardiography by gathering our inner strength for harmony, connection and convergence with Chief Director Dukhyun Kang as the center in order to grow further in the future, to respond flexibly to changes, and to lead future medical care, I also think this opportunity as an infinite honor to be able to work with you even if my ability is poor.
Preparing for a new time at the end of the long tunnel of the corona pandemic, I wish health and happiness to all members of the Korean Society of Echocardiography who do their best to fulfill their vocation while protecting patients’ health without letting their guard down as they have done so far and their families.
Happy New Year!!

Kyungsoon Hong

President of the Korean Society of Echocardiography

Echo Seoul and Cardiac imaging in 2021 / Seonhwa Lee, Yonsei University College of Medicine

From September 11 to 12, 2021, Echo Seoul and Cardiac imaging in 2021 was held online for 2 days at Baekyang Nuri Hall, Yonsei University. I was very sorry because the 2020 Echo Seoul conference was inevitably canceled due to COVID-19. I would like to express my gratitude for being able to attend the Echo Seoul conference, which was held with the efforts of several professors who are working hard on treatment and research despite the changes in daily life and the medical treatment environment and difficult times this year due to COVID-19.
This Echo Seoul and Cardiac imaging in 2021 was a meaningful conference where various and rich academic knowledge could be shared and educated through excellent lectures and discussions by many domestic and foreign teachers. In addition to echocardiography, I was able to learn about the experiences and latest knowledge of domestic and foreign teachers in various fields of cardiovascular imaging. In addition, it was a good learning ground where I was able to contact and learn about the latest treatment methods which have been actively discussed and studied recently, and I personally got a lot of ideas for setting the direction of future research. Especially this Echo Seoul & Cardiac imaging was a time to get answers to questions in clinical settings through in-depth lectures and discussions in the field of “Diastology”
I hope that ECHO Seoul will return to normal life in 2022 so that everyone will be given the opportunity to meet more freely and exchange opinions more freely at offline venues.

Echo Chosun Workshop 2021 / Nuri Lee, Chonnam National University College of Medicine

Hello. I am Nuri Lee, who has been working as a full-time doctor at Department of Cardiology, Chonnam National University Hospital since 2020. On October 24, 2021, Sunday when autumn was in full swing, the 16th Eco Chosun Workshop was held at Kim Dongguk Hall on the 5th floor of Uiseong Building, Chosun University Hospital. It was a very beneficial time because I was able to listen to lectures on a wide range of contents in one place from the basics of obtaining echocardiogram image to its application to various clinical diseases and even topics including application of artificial intelligence (AI), which has been used in various fields recently, in echocardiography, cardiac oncology or measurement of atrial function that may be relatively unfamiliar to beginners like me were covered in one session. I also remember that Professor Kyungsik Jang of Chosun University College of Medicine, who published an article recommending movies related to heart surgery in the newsletter of the Echocardiography Society last year, gave a retirement special lecture titled “A Cardiologist’s Warm-hearted Movie Story”. In fact, I, who started my full-time doctor life with the COVID-19 pandemic, have hardly attended conferences after obtaining a specialist qualification. Now I have no sense of difference that many large and small meetings are held non-face-to-face, and I think that the online conference has been fully established after a period of transition. However, I think that the precious time of meeting in person and meeting face to face to acquire the knowledge and wisdom given by many teachers is by no means small. I hope that the time will come again soon when we can meet and greet each other and open up pleasant stories and academic fields without causing a problem in the quarantine of the infectious disease.

Echo 360 Structural Heart Imaging 2021 / Daeyoung Kim, Yonsei University College of Medicine

ECHO 360 Structural Heart Imaging 2021 was successfully held at Conrad Seoul for two days from October 30 (Sat) to 31 (Sun), 2021, with the enthusiastic support of about 1,200 online and offline attendees.
This ECHO 360, which has already celebrated its 5th anniversary, has become a meaningful opportunity to satisfy the academic needs of medical personnel from various fields such as Surgeon, Interventionist, Imaging cardiologist, etc. who are interested in research and medical treatment related to structural heart imaging because more colorful and lively lectures and discussions were held. Especially in the shared decision-making session, where teachers from various fields were invited as chairperson and panelist, a hot and lively discussion on effective treatment strategies for aortic / mitral valve disease was held based on the rich knowledge and experience of teachers in each field, making the meaning of this academic event more deeply.
I am doing my best for clinical treatment and research with a sense of duty and responsibility to always provide the best solution to patients. However, I often feel that I do not see the entire patient because I focus only on the disease at hand. Through shared decision making at this ECHO 360, I came to realize once again the importance of insight and wisdom that encompasses the entire forest beyond looking at just one tree at a time.
In the future, I expect that the ECHO 360 program, which will be held next year, will be a richer and more meaningful place as active research and treatment in each field under the responsibility of many doctors will nurture the remarkable growth of the structural heart imaging field.

The 51st Fall Conference of the Korean Society of Echocardiography / Jeongsuk Seo, Inje University College of Medicine

The 51st Fall Conference of the Korean Society of Echocardiography was held for two days, November 27 and 28, 2021 at the Grand Walkerhill Hotel in Seoul. Following last year, it was held in a hybrid form of online participation and on-site participation due to the influence of COVID-19.
At the site of the conference, the conference was held under the questionnaire, QR code registration, vaccination check, and strict quarantine rules. A total of 1,260 people (39 foreign attendees) registered, among whom 233 attended on-site and 1,027 online.
Without being limited to cardiac imaging diagnosis, this fall conference was composed of a broad spectrum including treatment and research on various heart diseases including structural heart disease. In addition, given the situation where it is difficult for overseas attendees to attend the conference, virtual lectures by 20 prominent foreign speakers were organized on a large scale. Thanks to the hard work of 177 faculties during the conference, five categories of lectures were held: Session for beginners for those who are new to echocardiography and for specialists, session for experts, highlight session, English session, session for young cardiologist to share the latest knowledge in the field of echocardiography and to improve members' research and treatment capabilities. There was a joint session with the Korean Society of Heart Failure (KSHF), the Japanese Society of Echocardiography (JSE), and the Korean Society of Interventional Cardiology (KSIC).
On the second day of the conference, a general meeting was held, and the Young Researcher Award was awarded to Professor Jinkyung Oh of Chungnam National University College of Medicine.
After the lecture every day over two days of the conference, there was a generous prize draw for online and field attendees, and many doctors received pleasant gifts in addition to academic gains.
